I am beyond excited because today is the first day I finally begin to take action and start writing my blog. My entire life, like many, I’ve felt unsure about my true path in the world. It seemed as though I didn’t really know what I wanted out of life, or how I was going to get there!
Despite the perpetual ambivalence, an anchoring passion of mine has been the pursuit of truth in discovering and understanding personal growth and the psychological elements within. Thus, learning about myself, how I could improve myself, and experimenting, have always captured my fascination.
But there is so much out there!!!
So many books, articles, audios, programs, podcasts, workshops, etc.
What actually works, and what doesn’t?!
And that’s how this blog was born.
So, what is ReachingSelf?
I started the blog to document and share my personal growth journey in hopes of reaching many like-minded individuals who are also on a personal growth journey or hope to be.
What I love most about personal growth is seeing it applied to people—hearing people’s journeys through failure and success, reaching their goals, and surpassing all odds and naysayers.
Here’s the thing, though:
We’ve all heard a TED Talk.
A myriad of success stories…
But we only hear the story after the fact. After the journey. After the goal has been achieved.
That’s typically when people share their stories.
We don’t usually see for ourselves how it really was.
We might hear about the before and during, but we never get to see it or experience it along with the people while they are on their way. The story is told after the fact, and the narration could be biased, exaggerated, subjective, or even false. Often, we can even hear sometimes same-old passed down advice that was never actually applied by the “advice advocate.”
I would like to meet the person before they achieved what they did and during the process! Wouldn’t you? There’s more impact. To have known Steve Jobs before Apple, Angelina Jolie when she was a self-harming teenager, Oprah during her rough childhood…
The Underdog. The Loser. The Stagnant. The Disadvantaged. The Weak. The Depressed. The Beginner.
Then… The Potential. The Prevailing. The Growth. The Transformation. The Achiever. The Leader. The Winner.
Someone who’s always been great, always wins, doesn’t have to try and succeeds at everything? That’s boring. That doesn’t move me. That’s not life. We all have our struggles. We are all beginners at everything at one point. Don’t you agree?
~ What the human mind, body, and spirit are capable of never ceases to amaze me. ~
I want to know…
What makes the once-shy, reserved girl in high school go on to give a Ted Talk on stage in front of millions?
What allows a student part of a failing school system to change his predestined path of mediocrity and be accepted into an Ivy?
How does the man who once had crippling fear speaking to women get the date with his dream girl?
What turns the woman who grew up in a problematic and impoverished home into one of the most influential women in the media?
What makes the homeless alcoholic drug addict into a world-renowned philanthropist, creator of a rehab center?
How does the 400-pound man transform his habits and lifestyle to become healthy and fit?
Of course, these are dramatic examples, but even “smaller” achievements are just as significant: learning a skill; developing character; overcoming adversity; solving a problem; changing mindset and lifestyle.
This is how I wanted this blog to be a little different— think Myth Busters for personal growth.
“The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” – Socrates
Now, I am by no means an expert on anything. In fact, here I start with an empty slate, an open mind and a willingness to grow and share.
I want you to see and watch for yourself – see me at point A and watch me get to point B, covering many different topics on personal growth.
How?
I am a lifelong learner, researcher, student, and experimenter.
Through ReachingSelf, I will bring you science-backed research and studies, my self-experimentation, my trial and error, and my honest opinions and feedback on what worked and what didn’t.
I want to share everything that I learn and discover.
You’ll get to see firsthand my experiences, failures, setbacks, obstacles, challenges, successes, and breakthroughs, as well as secondhand accounts.
You get to, hopefully, see a story of success (and failure) in the making.
Most of all, I would like to hear about your story and journey through life and self-growth. Let’s start a conversation through this new platform and create and grow a community.
I am looking forward to taking you on this journey with me. So, welcome aboard as we jump into an uncharted adventure that I hope is found helpful, life-changing, exciting, entertaining and most of all transformative.
